Enviromental Rant

  • Jul. 11th, 2008 at 10:22 AM

okay, here goes, I had this giant rant to a couple of friends about my views of the world...one of them said that I should post it, here goes.

I hate consumerism.  It is one of the driving evils of this world.  I mean think of a walmart, just 5 years ago they were multipurpose stores that were handy and good for basic stuff.  Now they are what I like to call uberstores.

They have everything that you could possibly need and more.  Sure, this might seem like a good thing at first but for the long term it is terrible.  It kills any diveristy that stores might have.  Think of how much money is funnelling into corrperations such as these, think of it on a daily basis, now on a yearly basis....it is mindboggeling.  Now Walmart even has a gorcery section, it is like it has an entire grocery store inside of it.  So that now people don't even have to go to more then one store.

Of course grocery stores themselves have changed radically even in my lifespan.  No longer are grocery stores called grocery stores no they are now superstores....They have sections for clothing and toys and books and furniature.  They even have an upper level where you can take courses or join clubs, hell, I took my babysitting course in a grocery store.  You can take yoga or join a loosing weight club.  You are not supposed to TAKE YOGA IN GROCERY STORES...it is upsurd it used to be that a grocery store was a place to buy food, only buy food, infact that was their sole purpose.  Now grocery stores sell everything and "everything stores" sell groceries.  Essentially all retail opperations are merging together so that they can cover the largest market.

Of course the next thing to come will be that there will be coffee shops in Walmart so that it will even become a place for social gatherings.  I think though what bothers me the most about all these new stores is the fact that right next to one I saw them building a storage building, so that people when they fill up their basements with all the junk they bought they now have a place to store it.  YOU SHOULDN'T NEED A PLACE TO STORE YOUR EXTRA STUFF, USE YOUR FREAKING HOUSE.

of course I know that some people live in appartments and don't have much space and I am fine with them using storage facilities such as this, but this storage facility is not being built in the city where appartments are... no it is being built in the suburbs, thats right the FREAKING SUBURBS where people go to settle down and have kids, where they buy brand new houses.  Heres a hint if you have so much stuff that your new house can't contain it all you need to get rid of some stuff, you just own too much, end of story.  Of course I am not saying that you have to be a good sameritian and give it all away.  You could sell it on ebay, hey thats an idea you could turn a profit here, doesn't that sound like a good idea?  Soon i bet that walmart will rent storage space in its own stores, so that you can immediatly dump off the junk that you just bought, you'll be able to cut out the middle man of the house.  Actually soon you won't even need a house walmart will just start renting space from above it, so that you can live in your walmart condo and send your kids to the walmart school.

Honesty it is obscene how much people spend in this day and age, you don't need to have 5 coffee makers, they all do the same fricken thing, they make coffee, unless you are starting a home buisness as a barista then you don't need to make 5 pots of coffee at a time, ever.

but enough of that onto the next topic

does anyone know what the greenbelt is? anyone? well if you don't I'll fill you in, the greenbelt is a large mass of government protected land, it is mostly forest and is a truly beautiful part of nature.  Unfortunelty for the greenbelt, the city of Ottawa is thinking of doing a bit of deforestation.  Yeah they want to help stop the horror of urban sprawing by guess what sprawing, yeah that makes sense how?  Where did they learn their logic? In kingdom hearts?  Fortuently this topic is still in debate so there is a chance that our precious forests might not be totally killed.  Actually according the the development planners all this development will merely maximise the use of the space while not striking a leathal blow to the enviroment.  A LEATHAL BLOW?!?  what are they trying to do, just maime it and beat it a couple times without completly killing it?  this is good how?

anyways that is all for now
